Meet Penny, who
lives in Halifax with her dad and two little sisters, Emily and baby Maggie.
Their mother died the year before, and so Penny, as the oldest, must take on a
lot of household responsibilities. In fact, sometimes she feels more like a
mother than a sister to Emily and Maggie. But still, having too much to do is
better than being sent off to live with her grandmother in Montreal--which is
what her father means to do. Then on the cold, sunny morning of December 6,
1917, any worries about the future are cast aside. Penny is late for school
again and hurrying her sisters out the door when a terrible explosion turns
the world upside down. Something has happened in the harbour, their home is
destroyed, and it is up to Penny to find safety for herself and her sisters. |
