Charlie Wilcox,
born in Newfoundland, weighing two pounds and with a club foot, is destined to
go to sea. He'll follow his father and his uncles - captains all - and make
the family proud. Then Charlie overhears his father say, "He' s not made for
the ice."
Misinterpreting his parents' dreams of a better future,
Charlie is determined to prove himself. He tried stowing away on a sealing
ship, only to emerge from his hiding place to find he is surrounded by
soldiers, not sealers. Charlie isn't heading for the ice, he's headed for war!
~ Reviews ~
“McKay depicts small town
Newfoundland with humor and verve, catching us instantly with her
straight-speaking characters and their long standing knowledge of each other.”
Toronto Star
“Sharon McKay does indeed spin a
good yarn, from the beautiful outport of Brigus to the trenches of the Somme.”
National Post
“McKay’s prose is scintillating
and she’s at her best when describing the fighting – you can almost hear the
deafening shelling, smell the mucky odor of the trenches, see the blinding
flash of the guns, hear the ping, ping of the snipers’ post-battle bullets.
Hamilton Spectator
“Charlie Wilcox is an
old-fashioned hero with enormous appeal of a runt who triumphs against the
odds.”
Quill & Quire Magazine
“Charlie Wilcox offers up fresh
images of a time that many teenagers associate with old men at cenotaphs.”
The New Brunswick Telegram
“A riveting story of friendship,
loyalty, bravery and honour. There are no glorified heroes here, only ordinary
people caught in extraordinary events doing what they believe in.”
School Library Journal
“An absolutely great book. It is
one of the best adventurer stories to come out of Newfoundland, and it will
become a classic.”
The Telegram, St. John’s.
